Whenever we don’t know where something should be kept, we just throw it in the fridge because what could it hurt, right? Not right. Here’s a list of things that surprisingly don’t go in the fridge:
1. Hot Sauce
It won’t hurt to keep hot sauce in the fridge, but it doesn’t need to be there, so make room in your fridge and keep it in the cupboard. Hot sauces are usually full of vinegar, which will prevent any bacterial growth. Much like other foods, the heat of the chili will also be much more potent if it’s kept at room temperature.
The best place to keep tomatoes is on the counter. The fridge can cause damage to the membrane of the tomato, making them watery and mealy.
This was the item I was most surprised about. UC Davis in California did a study of cucumbers and concluded they should be stored at room temperature as cold can injure them by making them watery and pitted.
If you plan to eat your apples within the first week or two, keep them out of the fridge, this will make them taste better. Any longer than that, keep them in the fridge to make them last a bit longer.
The creamy goodness of avocados is best enjoyed at room temperature. If you’ve got a bunch of ripe ones around and no plans to use them, they can be placed in the fridge to keep them good for a few extra days.
If bananas are kept in the fridge, they won’t ripen properly. The skin of bananas will eventually turn black because of the impact the temperature has on the cell walls of the fruit.
Cake will taste much better if it is kept out of the fridge, it will also stay fresher and more moist. Secure it in an airtight container for up to a few days for the best taste.
8. Olive Oil
Storing oils in the fridge will cause them to become cloudy and grainy. Storing at room temperature maintains the colour and solidity of oils.
Onions have starch in them which will become damp and soggy, and cause them to spoil if left in the fridge for long.
Storing honey in cold temperatures causes it to solidify into sugar crystallization.
